Urban governments have taken the lead in promoting sustainable mobility by implementing measures such as zero-emission zones, clean public transport and incentivizing walking and cycling. But what should cities do next to continue this progress? What ambitious actions can they take to further advance sustainable mobility?

It’s no coincidence that around 40% of the world’s population lives within 100 kilometers of a coast, as coastal living provides access to abundant opportunities and a wealth of natural resources. But, as rising sea levels create mounting risk, can coastal communities adapt? Could floating cities like the one currently being built in Busan provide a viable alternative to exodus from the world’s coasts? And, with dense coastal populations putting pressure on natural ecosystems, should they?

The U.K., Australia, France and South Korea are investing heavily in hydrogen, drawn by its versatility, potential to be produced from renewable energy sources and promise in decarbonizing difficult-to-electrify areas of industry. Yet hydrogen production can be energy intensive and costly, among other challenges. Why do proponents consider hydrogen a winning solution, while critics question the risks of creating a hydrogen economy? How do other clean energy options like solar, wind, nuclear and geothermal measure up? How should countries be thinking about creating the right mix of renewables and other clean energy sources, and why is it so important to get the balance right?

Shipping is responsible for up to 3 percent of annual emissions globally and, as such, the industry is under increasing pressure to decarbonize. With the global maritime industry setting a goal of making zero-emission shipping vessels commercially viable by 2030, which fuels hold the most promise for decarbonization? What are the pros and cons of alternatives like hydrogen, biofuels and ammonia, and what challenges need to be addressed as the private and public sectors retrofit fleets and transition towards carbon-friendly vessels?

According to some estimates, climate change could displace as many as 200 million people by 2050, and that’s not a vague, distant figure. Droughts, extreme storms and rising sea levels have already produced forced migration, with up to 80 percent of those affected displaced within Asia and the Pacific. Are development banks, refugee protection agencies and governments taking the necessary steps to prepare? How can we ensure a dignified future for those who stand to lose their homes and communities? And how can the most vulnerable populations ? children and young people, women, the L.G.B.T.Q. community and the elderly ? be protected?
